In 1968, the leader of the Black Panther Party, Huey P. Newton, ran for congress in California's 7th congressional district. But this wasn't any old activist campaign- Newton ran his campaign from a jail cell after his 1967 imprisonment for participation in an Oakland shootout with police. Under the electoral banner of the Peace & Freedom Party, Newton ran with a down-ballot slate of Black Panther candidates, calling for a platform ahead of its time: decent housing, an end to police brutality, human rights for racial minorities, etc. He would end up with 7.5% of the vote, a strong showing for a candidate both political establishments feared the political power of.
