  • The concept of Commons is a way to combine elements of streetwear with left-wing politics while leaving behind some of fashion’s materialistic elements. Unfortunately, we are still forced to operate under the Capitalist system, but in the meantime we can use our business to give back to leftist causes.

Rest assured, Commons is not a multinational corporation. I am a part-time college student and elementary school substitute teacher. My brother, an independent graphic designer, creates the designs.

  • Again, it is unfortunate that (until the revolution, at least) we have to operate within the Capitalist system to source our products. Still, we choose the most ethical paths to source our products. An independent graphic designer (my brother) creates our apparel designs. As for the actual garments and printing, we use Tapstitch, who uses a print-on-demand system to cut down on the waste of fast fashion bulk-ordering. They also use decomposable packaging and ink, again cutting down on the environmental impact.

  • Solidarity with leftist causes is extremely important to us here at Commons, and we use the business to do just that. 10% of all profit is donated to a different left-wing cause or charity every single month. The following lists each cause each month’s profits are donated to:

January: DSA Labor Solidarity Fund (makes it possible for DSA chapters to support workers during strikes union drives, etc.)

February: Save the Children in Congo (medical aid to young children and pregnant mothers in the DRC as they face war, starvation, and sickness)

March: International Rescue Committee in Sudan (providing emergency humanitarian aid to the Sudanese displaced by never-ending war)

April: Heal Palestine (providing life-saving emergency surgeries and rehabilitation for children in Gaza)

May: Lucy Parsons Labs (investigating illegal uses of technology by private corporations and bringing them to court. Especially important in the age of AI!)

June: Track AIPAC (documenting and publicizing how much Israeli blood money our politicians take)

July: Immigrant Defense Project (providing legal assistance to those detained by ICE thugs)

August: NAACP's Center for Environmental and Climate Justice (primarily fighting back against the environmental injustice of AI data centers)

September: Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee (Joint organization of the Democratic Socialists of America with America’s most left-wing union, United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, to make labor unions more accessible to the common worker)

October: Wikipedia (an under-appreciated symbol of Socialism in the real world. They provide knowledge to the masses at no cost with no profit incentive)

November: Democratic Socialists of America (by far the most successful Socialist force in American politics. Whether you’re DSA, PSL, CPUSA, etc., remember we’re fighting for the same thing here)

December: Food Bank for NYC (feeding the needy in New York)
