Left-wing American politics plagued over and over by the internal factionalism of the members themselves. The Communist Party USA itself was a spinoff made up of the Socialist Party's most left-wing pro-Soviet members. They found much success, soon growing more prominent than the Socialist Party itself, but brought about its founding eventually contributed to its own demise. In 1929, a small group led by General Secretary Jay Lovestone, abandoned the party over its policy of wholeheartedly backing Stalin's Soviet Union. They formed the Communist Party USA (Opposition).
Even when the CPUSA(O) wanted back into the party years later, personal grievances held back the Communists from uniting. The (Opposition) eventually dissolved in 1941 with no success and most unable to re-integrate into the CPUSA.
